Do You Really Need a Seed Sower?

In case you don’t know what a seed sower is, it’s a little gadget to help you plant really tiny seeds, one at a time. I always thought that I never needed one until this year when I tried to plant Coleus seeds and strawberry seeds. They were microscopic. This finally motivated me to buy a seed sower.
The two most popular ones are the Dial Seed Sower and the Mini Seedmaster. I put my strawberry seeds into the Mini Seedmaster. This one looks like a syringe and when I pressed the plunger, almost half of the seeds came pouring out into the potting mix and I couldn’t find them again. Boy was I mad! I had 10 strawberry plants coming up in each cell of my seedling tray. I could have done it better by hand.
Next, I tried the Dial Seed Sower. This one has a flat, round head and a shoot at the bottom for the seeds to go down. There are notches inside the head for the seeds to go through, and you can move the head to select the size of the seed that you are going to plant. This one worked a little better, but static electricity was causing some of the seeds to stay inside. I had to open it up and scrape the seeds out with my finger. I wasn’t impressed, although some people love this thing.
So, what is the answer to the question “do you really need a seed sower?” In my opinion, it’s “no”.
