A Book Review of Incredible Vegetables from Self-Watering Containers: Using Ed's Amazing POTS System, by Edward C. Smith
Published by Linda Nicastro in Gardening Book Reviews • 8/16/2009 3:42:11 AM
I bought this book in the beginning of the summer, hoping that it would help me grow a better garden. It did supply a few new ideas for vegetables and flowers. It was because of this book that I tried Swiss chard and found out that I like it. There were some varieties of vegetables and flowers mentioned in the book that I had already grown in past years with success. After reading it, I felt it was worth the money that I had spent.

The author, Edward C. Smith, also provides a “secret soil formula.” If you live in an apartment, you probably won’t have the room to mix up a batch of it. You also won’t have the room to make your own compost pile. Still, there is plenty of information here to help a balcony gardener grow a successful container garden. The book is also illustrated with beautiful color photographs taken by Ed’s wife, Sylvia.

One of the many complaints that people have had with the book is that it says it is going to teach you how to “make” a self-watering container, and then it doesn’t. It just tells you to obtain an “insert” for a regular pot, and then doesn’t tell you where to get the insert. I recognized the insert and Ed’s self-watering pots because I receive a catalog from Gardener’s Supply every year. You can get them at http://www.gardeners.com. All of the pots pictured in the book were donated to Ed so that he could conduct his growing experiments. The rest of us are not so lucky. We have to buy them.

I’ve found myself constantly referring to this book all summer long. It would provide a good starting point for someone that knows absolutely nothing about container gardening.
