What size container should you use?
4 plants in a 12 inch container
Lettuce will also grow in a window box
Which are the best varieties to grow?
These are really cool weather plants, but I have been looking into plants that will grow in the heat of summer.
For Lettuce:
Cool Weather: Tom Thumb is a dwarf lettuce that many people like. Mesclun mixes also do well in window boxes.
Hot Weather: The French Batavia lettuce (also known as Summer Crisp) is reported to have the texture of Iceberg lettuce. Some types are Nevada, Loma (sweet tasting), and Burpee Summer Crisp.
Green Ice is also supposed to be able to withstand the heat. Jericho lettuce grows in the desert and is a favorite of Israel. It has a sweet taste.
For Spinach:
Cool Weather: Bloomsdale Longstanding
Hot Weather: New Zealand spinach is not really spinach, but tastes like it. It will grow all summer.
