Potting Mix and Soil

Once you’ve chosen a container, you’ll need to fill it. Most containers can be filled with potting soil.

If you are using a self-watering container you must buy potting mix, not potting soil. Potting mix is lighter and won’t become waterlogged like potting soil. Most potting mixes now contain fertilizer. I used Miracle Gro Organic Potting Mix. If you want a potting mix that does not contain fertilizer, you can get it from Gardener’s Supply or mix your own.

Trying to mix your own can mean having to lift bags that weigh 40 pounds or more. A recipe that came with my Earthbox is:
45% peat moss
45% compost
10% perlite
2 cups dolomite or hydrated lime

If you are growing cactus or African violets, there are special mixes available for them.

Never use topsoil to fill a container. It is too heavy and the soil won’t drain well.
