Peas

What size container should you use?
1-3 plants in an 8 inch container
8-10 plants in a 2 foot window box
8 plants in a 12 inch container
6 plants in a 10 inch container

Which are the best varieties to grow?
Sugar Ann
snap peas are the best kind of peas to grow in containers. The vines are short, and they are very sweet.

I’ve tried about every kind of regular pea, and it takes a lot of plants to get a good yield. One problem I’ve always had is that the growing season is too short. Peas need cold weather, and the weather seems to get hot right when they are ready to produce. This year I started the plants even earlier, but plants grow slower in cool weather. I also couldn’t get
Sugar Ann snap peas, so I am growing Sugar Sprint.

I used earthworm castings as fertilizer last year and noticed a big difference in the color of the plants over previous attempts.

Should you use inoculant?
Most gardening supply catalogs sell inoculant for peas and beans (not soybeans) to use at the time of planting. It’s supposed to increase the yield. I used it one year. Since I didn’t notice a difference, I never used it again.
