Organic Fertilizer

Seaweed or Kelp-This is the most recommended fertilizer for container gardening. It is usually used in liquid form and can be sprayed on, poured on, or put into the reservoir of a self-watering container.

Earthworm Castings-This is my favorite fertilizer and I have noticed the greatest difference in the health of the plants. It is actually manure from worms and is usually purchased in bags. You have to fill at least 20 percent of your container with worm castings. This doesn’t make it very economical, so I supplement with liquid seaweed. If you’ve got the room and the money, you can buy your own worms and bins to make your own castings. Gardener’s Supply has a liquid spray made by Terra Cycle that sells for under $10.00.

Here are some others I’ve tried:

Energy Buttons-Made from chicken manure. They were supposed to be odorless but had a slight smell for three days. Available from Gardener’s Supply.

Vegetable Fertilizer-This contains no animal byproducts. I plan to use up the bag but I would prefer something easier for the plants to absorb such as a liquid. Available from Gardens Alive.

Another great source for inexpensive fertilizer is Pine Tree Seeds.
